Note: After reading the comments and advice from my fellow HSV readers, I made some major changes to this story. Some of things I had in mind for Benkei would possibly contradict the secrets that would come out later and I didn't want to possibly spoil you guys before it was time. Not to mention that it would cause too much confusion. I really do appreciate all your concerns and it helped me come to this decision. I'll probably delete the other one soon and hopefully, you guys will like the new changes to it.

Love you, guys!

.:*Chapter 1: Broken In Spirit And Fleeting Memories*:.
(壊れて御霊とつかの間の思い出, Kowarete Mitama to Tsukanoma no Omoide)

Inside of the Hotokegi household, darkness had filled the space of the once lively home and the only source of light that was coming into the house was the bright rays from the morning sun. The cold breeze from outside makes its way inside one of the rooms and a young man with brunette hair was currently sitting on the floor, leaning his back against the closet door. The boy had his head down as the clear droplets of water continued to fall from his eyes.

The wooden floor sploshed and splashed with tears and he began to sniffled softly as he clutched his chest with his hand. Irregular heartbeats throbbed violently and felt the air in throat suffocating him, making it difficult for him to breathe. Benkei, the Pink Virtuoso was suffering from a serious mental breakdown and it was really taking a toll on him. His mind couldn't even begin to comprehend what had happened and he opened his mouth to speak, but he closed it again...

*~0~*

Benkei had been there at the festival with his parents, Ugoki and Sakui, his soon-to be wife,Tamiko, his brother figure Tasshi and his wife Kokoro and baby Yuushin. It was turned into a family event after Benkei's mother had suggested that everyone spend this special occasion together. Not that the brunette had a problem with it or anything, but he wanted to spend some time alone with Tamiko and he was pretty sure that everyone else wanted the same thing. Of course, arguing with Sakui basically means you had a death wish and she would bite your head off for trying to change her mind.

Benkei and Tamiko had played a lot of games together and the brunette even won her a prize, which she loved dearly. Tasshi and Kokoro had let Yuushin take over the festivities for the evening and they took lots of pictures together as a family. Ugoki and Sakui had rode of the tunnel of love and they had enjoyed themselves a little too much during the ride.

Somehow, the family had mixed it up a bit by all the girls and the guys being paired off. Benkei and Tasshi had ended up going to an art booth where the two of them had competed in a quick sketching contest to win a prize. Of course, Tasshi had won that effortlessly, which made Benkei a tad bit upset but he brushed it off because he knew that his brother figure was the better artist. While holding Baby Yuushin, Ugoki had watched with laughter when he noticed the pouted expression on his son's face. Then, he glanced over at Tasshi as his eyes had slightly misted over from seeing him the taller brunette. Tilting his head to the side, he had smiled from seeing such a sight after a long time.

Sakui, Tamiko, and Kokoro had played simple games at the festival booths. When it came down to the game of 'Whack-A-Mole', Sakui immediately played that and she didn't play with the toy hammer that was provided with the game, she used her old partner Sabi. With that silver frying pans, she wreck every last mole with a simple swing of the wrist and this had scared everyone around them who was watching her. In her eyes, she was playing the game but to everyone else, she completely wrecked it. Both Kokoro and Tamiko had hugged each other out of fear and reflex from seeing something like that and they felt sorry for the person who had to close down that booth due to violent game-play.

So that evening, everyone had a good time during the festival and it was such a wonderful night as well. Somewhere down the line, everyone had came back to be with their families for the last festivity for the night. It was now time to crown the King and the Queen of the festival. Benkei had already knew who was going to win, but he still watched the ceremony as it took place. The brunette loved when they had the festival every year and it made the people in the village feel more alive and lively. Despite the lovely atmosphere, Benkei could help but feel that something wasn't right. It was like something was in the air, lurking and waiting for the right moment to appear...

Ba-dump.

The feeling wouldn't disappear and his paranoia was steadily becoming and more and more apparent. What was this unnerved feeling? It felt like pieces of his memories were fleeting, crumbling and most of all, it felt like something was going to vanish right before his eyes.

Ba-dump. Ba-dump.

A hand had gently clasped his own and he looked down to see his beloved smile that gentle smile that he loved so much. Tamiko's silvery eyes had let him know that whatever was bothering him, she was right here with him and so was his entirely family. Maybe Benkei was over thinking things again and he could have been stressing out from all the work that he's been putting lately.

Ba-dump. Ba-dump. Ba-dump.

'It's over...' A demonic voice had whispered in his mind.

And before Benkei could even think anymore about it, the loud clang from the crown dropping on the ground had resonated loudly and brought him from his own thoughts. He turned his attention to the front where Eimi and Priest Joshua were. There was something wrong with this picture: the high priest of the village was no longer there and everyone was left with a deafening silence. What in the world just happened? Did the Priest just...did he just disappeared in front of everyone?!

Then the worst thing happened.

One by one from inside the crowd, some of the people started disappearing like Joshua did and this not only frightened the civilians but it greatly worried the shinobi from what was happening. Benkei, Tamiko, and Kokoro's eyes had widen in fear from seeing everyone vanish right in front of them.

The brunette's lips quivered with horror as Benkei had surveyed the current situation. “What's going on here?”

Then a shriek of terror had escaped from Kokoro's throat as she shouted, “TASSHI!” This made the young assassin and the medic turn around to see what frightened the chunin so badly.

What Benkei had saw made his heart sink horrifically. There in front of his was his brother figure, Tasshi and he was slowly vanishing into nothingness. Baby Yuushin started to cry and reach out for his father and Tamiko had backed away from seeing such a sight. Benkei's eyes convulsed in terror and it wasn't a moment later that Tasshi had faded away without a trace...

“NOOO!!!” Kokoro had held her baby close to her and try to hold back her tears, but that was inevitable on her part. Her husband had just vanished right before her eyes and she broken down as she sobbed loudly from the horrible crisis that had just taken place. She fell to pieces after seeing her husband just disappear like that and screamed while crying.

“TASSHI!!!” The brunette yelled out in anguish towards the darkened skies...

*~0~*

His shoulders trembled in fear as he felt his heart shatter into a million pieces from remembering the tragic events that surrounded his brother. How could he had let this happened? Why did it have to happen to him and everyone else? Who's the one responsible for this terrible occurrence.

'You're an assassin and yet you're reduced to this sorry state? How long are you going to stay like that? You've been like that for the past 8 hours.

Benkei had slowly opened his eyes and he felt the presence of another person inside of him. It was his inner persona that he defeated a couple of years ago and he picked the worst time to try and talk some sense into him.

'Not that I care or anything, but your health is gonna suffer and deteriorate if you keep acting like this...'

“Just go away. Leave me alone...” His tone was adamant possibly colder than he usually was when he was angry. Benkei just wanted to be by himself right now and his inner persona was gonna be a piece of work to try and deal with. Catching the brunette in his most vulnerable state was when he was the most irritable and dangerous.

“...shi...” he muttered in a whisper.

Benkei had remembered the first time he had met Tasshi when he was only ten years old. The brunette thought that Tasshi was one of the coolest people he had ever met and the fact that he was an artist had made the two of them kindred spirits.

“asshi...” He stated again with a little more volume.

As Benkei grew older and hung out with Tasshi more, he started to think of him as an older brother figure. It had made him very that he actually had someone to come to if he wanted to ever talk about personal things. In turn, Tasshi had grew quite fond of Benkei as well and consider him like a little brother...

“Tasshi...!” Benkei said once more, but it was more of a yell than anything.

And he broke down again as he sobbed even louder and harder than he did before. Benkei had hugged himself tightly and the tears wouldn't stop flowing as he curled up against the wall. He couldn't deal with the fact that he couldn't even save him at all. All those sweet memories with Tasshi...Benkei cherished them all so dearly and yet, he couldn't even-

His inner persona sighed heavily in aggravation and he spoke to him again from the deep recesses of his mind. 'You dumbass! This isn't the time for crying! Instead of weeping like some weak damsel in distress, you need to pick yourself up, get yourself together, and fight to try and keep those memories!!!'

Magenta eyes had widen from his persona's declaration and he listened intently to what he was saying.

'You made it this far, right?! If you quit now, it's all over! When you give up, you give up on everything that you created and everything that molded you into the person that you are! More importantly, you give up on yourself and I refuse to sit here and listen to you feeling sorry for yourself all because you think you couldn't save him!!!'

Benkei's inner persona had struck a hard nerve and the brunette couldn't believe that his inner self wasn't trying to show any remorse at all for the pain that he was feeling. How could he possibly understand the feeling of being helpless and useless even though you know you had strength to try and prevent it from happening.

“I don't have time for your bullshit right now...” With that declaration, the brunette had slammed his fist into the wall behind him, making a large crinkled dent with pieces of plaster falling off from it. “...let me just...can I please grieve in peace without any ridicule from you right now...”

Benkei had felt pathetic in a sense, but he didn't care. It's only been eight hours since this happened and he was already a wreck without Tasshi around. Those two were inseparable around each other and it just didn't feel right without him here. “What are we going to do about this situation...?” He was officially at a lost and he feared for the worst to come.

If Tasshi didn't come back, there is no doubt that he'll probably lose his memories of him and his reason for living would have no meaning anymore. His parents were still here, but his bonds with Tasshi were much stronger and even now, those memories of them were slowly fleeting from him.

And it frightened him to the core knowing that this might be one query that he wouldn't be able to solve...
